Is salting included in a snow removal contract?
It depends on the contract, and the proposal should say so in plain words. On our seasonal contracts salting is either built into the one winter number or billed per application, and we tell you which one we are proposing.
Salt inside the seasonal price gives you one figure for the whole winter and no argument during a storm about whether an application was needed. Salt billed per application costs less in a mild winter and more in an icy one.
Salting runs on different weather from plowing. A freezing rain night or a refreeze after a thaw needs treatment without a single plowable inch, so an icy winter with little snow can still mean a lot of salt runs.
If a contract you are comparing is silent on salt, ask. Silence usually means it is billed separately.
