Why July Is the Right Time to Sign Your Snow Contract

July 8, 2026 · JRW Services LLC

Nobody wants to think about snow in July. That's exactly why it's the best month to lock in your winter contract.

Routes are built in the summer

A snow contractor's capacity is fixed: so many trucks, so many crews, so many hours in a storm. Routes get designed around the properties signed earliest, which means early signers get position at the front of a route, not bolted onto the end of one. In a 2 a.m. storm, that's the difference between cleared-at-5 and cleared-at-8.

Salt is bought in the summer

We fill our covered storage before the season at summer pricing. Contractors who wait buy salt into a rising market, and that cost lands in your contract. Signing early literally buys your salt cheaper.

The walkthrough happens in daylight

Sign in July and the pre-season site inspection happens in good weather with time to fix what it finds: a catch basin to mark, a pothole to patch, a pile location to rethink. Sign in November and the walkthrough becomes a drive-by, if it happens at all.

Renewals are leverage

If you have an incumbent contractor, this is also the time to ask them the hard questions about documentation, insurance and equipment. Their answers are more honest in July, when you still have alternatives, than in December, when you don't.
